The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has amended the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) to require, as a condition for loading a packed container onto a ship for export, each container to have a verified weight. This requirement will become legally effective on July 1, 2016.
The U.S. Coast Guard has declared existing U.S. laws and regulations for providing verified container weights fulfill the new SOLAS Regulation V1/2.
Shipments to Alaska require a declared weight and signature be provided on your bill of lading for acceptance at our terminals meaning, no change in process going forward as Span provides weights on every container we tender to the ocean carriers.
For international shipments please contact your international carrier for the requirements of SOLAS.
We thank you for your continued support in ensuring safe loading operations at Span.
If you have questions or require further information please contact your sales representative or customer service.
Thank You,
