Matson has announced that the final sailings for the 2025 Keep From Freezing (KFF) season will be the northbound sailing departing Tacoma on Friday, April 11 (MTC296N), and the southbound sailing departing Anchorage on Tuesday, April 15 (MTC296S).


As you are likely aware, Mount Spurr, a volcano located 80 miles west of Anchorage, is experiencing increased seismic activity. The Alaska Volcanic Observatory (AVO) recently stated that a volcanic eruption there was “likely, but not certain, to occur within the next few weeks or months.”


Span Alaska is excited to announce that we have released the first portion of our online payment portal. This first release is specific to customers without credit terms (COD) and is intended to streamline the payment process and eliminate delivery delays.


Please be advised that due to limited office hours at the Port of Alaska on Good Friday, April 18, 2025, the cutoff for southbound shipments containing hazardous materials will be noon on Thursday, April 17.


As we enter into peak season for shipping to Alaska, we wanted to send a friendly reminder that Span Alaska has early morning receiving hours at our Auburn, WA Service Center.


Span Alaska will be open and under normal operation on Monday, February 17, 2025, at all terminals. Matson will still maintain the normal two sailing schedule out of Tacoma, WA during the holiday week and southbound service will not be impacted.


The Parks Highway is currently blocked due to an avalanche north of Cantwell. Severe weather conditions continue to slow down the process of clearing the highway. This has directly affected the movement of freight to Fairbanks and beyond.


On December 15, 2024, there will be a change in the fuel surcharge (FSC) for shipments to and from Southeast Alaska points. Alaska Marine Lines has announced that the FSC will be reduced from 10.5% to 9.5%.


The Friday, December 6, sailing MKD293N has been delayed into Anchorage due to inclement weather in the Gulf of Alaska. Port vessel operations in Anchorage are now expected to start at 1300 on Tuesday, December 10.


Matson will have a single sailing during the week of Christmas. Voyage MAC289N will sail on Friday, December 27,and will arrive in Anchorage Tuesday, December 31, Kodiak on Friday, January 3, and will bypass Dutch Harbor. Matson will have a single sailing during the week of New Year’s. Voyage MKD295N will sail on Friday, January 3,and will resume Matson’s regular service schedule.


On November 24, 2024, there will be a change in the fuel surcharge (FSC) for shipments to and from Central Alaska points. Alaska Marine Lines and Matson Navigation Inc have announced that the FSC will be reduced from 22.5% to 20.5%


The Friday, November 15, sailing MKD291N has been delayed into Anchorage due to inclement weather in the Gulf of Alaska. Port vessel operations in Anchorage are now expected to start at 1300 on Tuesday, November 19.


Each year, the ocean carriers serving Alaska assess their expenses, including marine operating costs, terminal overhead, equipment maintenance, trucking, and capital investment in vessels and equipment, to help determine an appropriate General Rate Increase (GRI). Recently, the ocean carriers operating in Alaska filed for GRIs of 7.5% for the 2025 shipping season.


Matson will have a single sailing during the week of Thanksgiving. Voyage MKD292N will sail on Wednesday, November 27, and will arrive in Anchorage Sunday, December 1, and Kodiak on Monday, December 2. There will be no sailing from Tacoma on Friday, November 29.
